Avoid Moisturizer Sabotage: How to Choose the Right Moisturizer for YOUR Skin

Knowing how to choose a moisturizer that’s right for your skin is the first step to avoiding moisturizer sabotage. But what does that actually mean? What ingredients should you look for, and when is the best time to apply moisturizer? Let’s break it down so you can make the most of your skincare routine.
Know Your Skin Type
Here’s a simple way to determine your skin type: use blotting sheets to see how much oil is on your skin 20–30 minutes after cleansing, with no other products applied.
Normal Skin: Tiny dots of oil in the t-zone (forehead, nose, chin) – your skin is balanced.
Oily Skin: Large dots of oil on the t-zone, continuing onto the second or third blotting sheet – your skin produces excess oil.
Combination/Oily Skin: Several oil dots in part of the t-zone and only a little oil on the cheeks – your skin is mixed.
Dry Skin: Little to no oil on any area, with possible itchiness or dullness – your skin is dehydrated and in need of extra hydration.
Dehydrated Skin: The Most Overlooked Skin Condition
One of the most common mistakes I see is confusing dehydration with dry skin. Dehydrated skin isn’t a skin type—it’s a condition. It can affect any skin type: oily, combination, or dry. Because it isn’t about oil production, it’s often misdiagnosed or overlooked, leaving clients frustrated with their routine.
Signs of dehydration:
Tightness or a “squeaky clean” feeling after cleansing
Dull or lackluster complexion
Fine lines that appear more pronounced
Skin that feels rough or flaky in patches
How I support dehydrated skin:
Focus on water-binding ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, PDRN, and peptides.
Avoid over-stripping cleansers or harsh exfoliants that worsen water loss.
Apply hydrating serums or essences first, then lock in moisture with a lightweight cream or ampoule suitable for your skin type.
Even oily or combination skin benefits from hydrating layers when water-deficient.
💡 Tip: Hydration is the foundation. Without it, even the best serums and treatments can’t perform optimally. Once moisture balance is restored, dehydrated skin often responds beautifully—regardless of your skin type.
Choose a Moisturizer Based on Your Skin Type
Normal Skin: I recommend a water-based moisturizer that helps retain moisture—ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, dimethicone, proteins, and urea work beautifully. Antioxidants like Vitamin C, niacinamide, vitamin E, polyphenols, and gentle retinoids maintain healthy, resilient skin.
Oily Skin: The goal is to balance oil production and prevent breakouts. I like a light, water-based moisturizer with active ingredients such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid (BHA), hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, jojoba oil, or grapeseed oil. Antioxidants like green tea leaf, aloe vera, and allantoin calm inflammation, while glycerin locks in hydration without adding extra oil.
Combination/Oily Skin: A hybrid approach works best: combine water-based, oil-regulating ingredients from the oily skin category with hydrating actives suitable for normal skin.
Dry Skin: Look for oil-based or richer cream formulations with lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, aloe vera, and plant-based oils like jojoba. These restore hydration and reinforce the barrier.
When to Apply Moisturizer
Simple Routine: If you’re not layering multiple serums or essences, apply your moisturizer after cleansing, while your skin is still slightly damp. Do this morning and evening for best results.
Multi-Step Skincare Routine: If you’re layering essences, serums, or ampoules (especially for anti-aging), always apply moisturizer last. This ensures hydration is sealed in and actives can perform optimally.
Final Step: In the morning, always follow with sunscreen to protect your skin and maintain results.
My Favorite Moisturizers & Hydrating Ampoules
Here are the products I personally use and recommend to my clients for hydration, barrier support, and nourishment:
Hydrating Serums & Ampoules:
Rejuvenating Ampoule – Repairs the barrier, hydrates, and promotes elasticity.
Goat Milk Ampoule – Soothing hydration; a softer alternative to Rejuvenating Ampoule.
Moisture Tension Ampoule-Essence – Deep hydration with peptides; supports collagen and skin resilience.
Moisturizers & Barrier Support:
Aqua Waterdrop Infusion Cream – Lightweight hydration that plumps and refreshes.
Rejuvenating Cream – Strengthens the barrier and promotes elasticity.
Post Cell Rejuvenation Cream – Repairs, nourishes, and revitalizes skin after treatments or daily use.
HOP Volume Boost Moisturizer – Hydrates deeply while restoring volume and elasticity.
💡 Tip: I always recommend just a few drops per serum or ampoule, layer in the correct order, and finish with your moisturizer and sunscreen to maximize results.
